When I was a kid, I loved playing the piano — but I didn’t always love piano lessons. There were songs in my books that I just couldn’t stand. They felt pointless to me — I didn’t recognize or care about them, and I didn’t see why I needed to spend time learning them. I wanted to play songs I knew and loved — ones that got me excited and that I actually enjoyed playing — but once when I brought my Disney book to a lesson, my teacher told me it wasn’t “real” music.

I never forgot how discouraging that felt — and how much more I loved playing when the music actually meant something to me.
